Hello Forum Members,

Just joined up. Had an epic experience as I somehow managed to create 2 user accounts, the first one signing in using my google account and this one, that is actually the account I signed up as a member.....

Anyhow, a little about myself. Started trading in 2014 using CFD on FX and Indices Futures. Did not have a clue what I was doing and in a couple of months blew up my account, like most retail traders. That's when I realized I need to get back to the drawing board and figures out that if I wanted to make it in trading I had to treat it seriously and needed to train myself.

In 2016 I was introduced to trend following via Covel's website and books. Since then I have not looked back. Tried trading one or two trend following strategies but when the P&L went south, got the jitters and ceased trading. After some soul searching realized that I really needed to back test my strategy and complement it with others so as to smooth out the P&L during draw downs. Was searching for a backtesting platform to try when Richard via twitter suggested I gave Metatrader a go (the funny thing is that I've been using MT4 for some years yet it had never occurred to me to use it for back testing, a case of not seeing the forest for the trees!)

So here I am ready to begin a new stage of my educational journey, with no coding skills but with the ambition to learn how to back test properly and hopefully in the future  to be able to automate my own systematic trading strategy. That's all for now.

Cheers

Jacopo

Welcome aboard J. I hope you enjoy this experience.

Thanks for the brief intro. Your journey has been similar to mine. 🙂

There is a lot of flack directed towards MT4s capability in backtesting...but with a few tailored techniques we can overcome these obstacles. We certainly like having the ability to live trade and backtest on the same platform....so we have invested considerable time developing workarounds that respond to the limitations of MT4....and when all is said and done...we have a pretty powerful testing solution.

J....we are here to help our members....so if you would like to get into backtesting using MT4....then we are here to help you achieve that.

Take some time to navigate around and read some of the content on this site that catches your eye. When you are ready then let us know what you would like to learn and we can then put some podcasts together that respond directly to your queries. You might want us to do some walk throughs on the back-testing process etc.......and we are more than happy to do that.

We are now of the opinion that video content is probably far more appealing than the wall of text that I am used to creating so have decided to do many more videos to help out our members.

Looking forward to the many discussions we will have.

Cheers

Rich

Thanks for the welcome Richard.

From the little I've seen there is plenty of info on the forum to keep me busy while I digest it.

Totally agree with you. Video-podcast are a very effective way to get the message across. I am looking forward to seeing, as an example, your process for back testing one of your systems that on this site. In my humble opinion, there is nothing like understanding the thought process that goes on to decide what parameters to choose and how to stress test them.....The difficult art of keeping everything simple (less is more)!

As you suggested I will get back in touch once I have got up and running and have some meaningful questions.

Cheers

J.
