Three Books, One Question

Markets. Systems. Reality. Why I wrote a trilogy, and why the three books are meant to be read as one.

There is more order in the world than there should be.

I noticed it first in markets. For decades I watched patterns emerge from what the textbooks insisted was noise. Trends that persisted long after they should have dissolved. Crashes that cascaded through systems no one had designed. Structure appearing exactly where the models predicted randomness.

I didn’t have a theory for why. I just had the observation, repeated until I could no longer ignore it: the world is more structured than we expect. And the only question worth asking was why.

That question became three books.

The same question, at three scales

The Fractals of Finance asked what markets actually look like when you stop smoothing them into curves. Complex Adaptive Markets asked what living forces produce those shapes. And Carved by Impossibility asked the deepest version of the question: not why markets have structure, but why anything does.

Three books. One question. Each a wider lens on the same strange fact.

A trilogy shaped like a fractal

If you’ve read the first book, you’ll recognise the shape of what I’m describing. A fractal is a pattern that repeats at every scale. Zoom in and you find the same structure. Zoom out and it is there again. This trilogy is built that way on purpose. The insight that governs a market also echoes through ecosystems, minds, and the universe itself. The three books are one idea examined at three magnifications.

Markets. Systems. Reality.

One way of seeing

Whatever scale you look at, the same lessons keep surfacing. That structure is not built but revealed. That process outlasts prediction. That what survives is what coheres. That the observer is never outside the system, always inside it. That simplicity, held with discipline, is stronger than cleverness.

These are not trading tips. They are a way of seeing, one that happens to work in a portfolio, in a career, and in a life.

I never intended to write three books. I thought I was writing about markets.

The markets led me to complex systems. Complex systems led me to the deepest question I have ever asked. Somewhere along the way I realised these were never three separate books. They were one idea unfolding.

If you enjoy thinking about markets, complexity, science, or simply how reality seems to organise itself, I think you’ll enjoy taking that journey with me.

Because by the final page, you may discover you weren’t reading about markets at all.

The Trilogy

These four essays belong to a single project: a trilogy that follows one idea across three books. Each book stands on its own and can be read first, but together they form a continuous journey, from the geometry of markets, to the living systems that produce it, to the architecture of reality itself. The pattern that governs a price chart turns out to govern far more than markets, and each book follows it to a wider scale.

The Fractals of Finance
Book One. The geometry of markets.

Markets are neither smooth nor random. They are rough, structured, and self-similar, carrying the memory of their own past at every timescale. The first book replaces the comfortable bell-curve view of finance with the fractal geometry that actually governs price, and shows how to act inside it: not by forecasting the future, but by building a process resilient enough to meet it. It is where the Outlier Hunter is born, the trader who survives long enough to catch the rare, decisive moves that carry everything else.

Complex Adaptive Markets
Book Two. The living systems beneath price.

If the first book describes what markets look like, the second explains the forces that make them look that way. Beneath every price lies a living system of millions of participants, each responding to signals created by the others, adapting under pressure rather than settling into equilibrium. Feedback, memory, and emergence turn individual decisions into trends, fragility, and sudden change. And because we act inside the very system we are trying to read, the book arrives at the determined observer: the trader whose stability comes not from prediction but from coherence.

Carved by Impossibility
Book Three. What remains when everything else is eliminated.

The final book leaves finance behind and asks the deepest version of the question that began in the markets: why does structure exist at all? Its answer is the subtractive frame. The universe does not build, it carves, stripping away everything that cannot hold together until only the coherent remains. Followed through physics, biology, consciousness, and meaning, the same pattern that shapes a market turns out to shape reality itself. Markets, it turns out, were never the subject. They were the doorway.

Read only the first, and you will understand markets differently. Read the first two, and you will understand why markets behave as living systems. Read all three, and you will discover that neither book was really about markets. They were about the architecture of reality.

Three books. One journey.
