A Map to Systematic Trading Under Uncertainty

You do not need to read this site chronologically. Start with the question that brought you here.

ATS began with systematic trend following. Over time, the questions became larger. Why do trends persist? Why do a handful of observations dominate long-run outcomes? Why does diversification matter differently when the objective is to capture outliers? Why do conventional measures sometimes struggle with strategies built around positive skew?

The answers led into fat tails, path dependence, complex adaptive systems, portfolio construction, empirical research and the architecture of robust trading programmes.

This page is the map.

Markets do not owe us certainty. The challenge is not to predict what comes next, but to build a process capable of surviving uncertainty, remaining exposed to opportunity, and participating when the rare moves that matter finally arrive.

Learn the foundations

Before the advanced material, begin with the machinery. What is a system? What is an edge? Why does position sizing matter? What does diversification actually do? How should we think about noise, drawdowns, backtesting, equity curves and the psychology of following a process?

Foundations
The dedicated Foundations hub establishes the principles that the later work on Outlier Hunting, research and system architecture depends upon. Enter Foundations →

Understand Outlier Hunting

The largest opportunities are rare, unevenly distributed and obvious only after they have happened. Outlier Hunting does not try to identify them in advance. It builds a process capable of remaining present long enough to participate when they arrive.

  • Outlier Hunting

The definition and provenance of the framework, and the best place to begin with the idea itself.

  • We Are Not Them

Why different objectives require different behaviour, portfolio construction and measures of success.

  • The Lifting Power of Outliers

Why a small number of observations can carry a disproportionate share of long-run performance.

Follow the evidence

A trading philosophy is not enough. ATS increasingly tests its propositions against long histories and broad market samples. The research asks what conventional statistics see, what they miss, and what changes when wealth is path-dependent and returns are fat-tailed.

  • Research & Evidence

The curated gateway to ATS work on measurement, outliers, compounding, path dependence, correlation and robustness.

  • Risk Is Not Variance

A research series examining what variance measures, what it does not, and why dispersion should not be confused with the full economic meaning of risk.

  • The Compounder's Delight

Why similar summary statistics can conceal profoundly different paths to terminal wealth.

  • The Fair Game That Kills You

Why multiplicative wealth and absorbing barriers change what a statistically fair game means to a living investor.

Enter complex markets

Markets are populated by adaptive agents whose actions alter the environment they are trying to understand. Feedback, emergence, reflexivity, path dependence and scale are not side topics here. They help explain why simple prediction breaks and why robust process matters.

  • Complex Markets

The curated ATS gateway into complex adaptive systems, emergence, embedded agents, reflexivity, fractals, boundaries and process.

  • The Embedded Agent

The observer is inside the system. The map can change the territory it tries to describe.

  • The Universe Is a Verb

A deeper exploration of process, becoming, boundaries and why nouns can hide a world made of change.

  • The Hidden Shape of Markets

Fractals, scale and the architecture hidden inside apparent market irregularity.

See how a programme is built

Principles eventually have to become machinery. Entries, exits, position sizing, portfolio construction, ensembles, rollover, execution and process all have to work together. No single component is the intelligence. The intelligence is in the architecture.

The System Anatomy Series
The Foundations work asks why. System Anatomy moves into the engine room and asks how those principles become a functioning systematic trend programme. Enter the engine room →

Watch it happening

The evergreen work explains the framework. The reports keep it connected to actual markets. Trend strength, breadth, reversals and performance are followed as they unfold, without requiring a forecast of what comes next.

  • This Week in Trend

The weekly view of global futures trends, breadth and the relationship between the market environment and realised trend-following returns. The This Week in Trend archive keeps the series together in one place.

  • Reports and the historical record

Classic Trend reporting, comparative index work and the changing market environment through time.

  • Practitioner conversations

Discussions with systematic managers, researchers and practitioners about what works, what fails and why.

Go deeper

Some ideas need more room than an article can provide. Others benefit from a permanent reference point. The books, glossary, reading list and full archive extend the map beyond the principal routes above.

  • Books

Long-form arguments and complete frameworks developed beyond the limits of individual articles.

  • Glossary

ATS terminology defined in the context in which the ideas are actually used.

  • Reading List

The wider intellectual influences behind the work.

  • Series Archive

The longer connected arguments, gathered in one permanent destination.

  • The Vault

The broader archive of reports, research, articles, series, podcasts and video.

You do not need to agree with everything here. The purpose of ATS is not to provide a doctrine. It is to make the assumptions visible, test what can be tested, and build processes that remain useful when the future refuses to cooperate.
