Graham Capital Management was founded in 1994 by Kenneth Tropin and has operated at the intersection of discretionary and systematic macro investing ever since. Dr Edward Tricker leads the quantitative side of that house, having joined in 2011 after doctoral work in statistics at Imperial College and an earlier stint at Winton. He oversees a systematic operation that has grown well beyond its trend-following origins into a broader quantitative macro capability.

What distinguishes Graham’s position is the deliberate coexistence of discretionary and systematic disciplines under one roof. Tricker makes no apology for it. He argues that domain experts with deep market knowledge strengthen the research environment, and that combining the rigour of systematic processes with the interpretive depth of experienced discretionary traders produces something more powerful than either alone. The collaboration creates tension, but productive tension.

The TTU conversation explores how Graham approaches portfolio construction when the objective is to generate returns across the widest possible range of market environments. Tricker discusses the evolution of trend following, the limitations of correlation as a diversification measure, the challenges of crisis alpha framing, and what he actually looks for when building and validating systematic models. It is a thoughtful account of how a firm maintains intellectual honesty when the temptation to curve-fit is always present.
