Welcome to the Algorithmic Advantage – Episode 6: Art Holly: Who Needs to Backtest?

Art Holly is one of the most experienced practitioners to appear on The Algorithmic Advantage. He began his career at Union Bank of Switzerland in the 1980s, where he first encountered Market Profile, a framework for understanding market structure through the distribution of price and time at price that has informed his trading ever since. Over more than three decades he has worked as both a portfolio manager and an allocator, giving him a perspective on systematic strategies that spans both sides of the investment relationship.

The provocative episode title, “Who Needs to Backtest?”, reflects Art’s experience-based conviction rather than a rejection of quantitative rigour. When you have traded through enough market cycles, observed how certain structural behaviours repeat across decades, and built a deep intuitive understanding of what patterns are durable and why, the incremental validation provided by a backtest tells you less than it tells a newer practitioner. This is not a license for carelessness. It is a recognition that genuine market wisdom is itself a form of evidence.

Art’s portfolio of four strategies spans long-term trend following, short-term models, a distinctive approach to short selling, and fundamental data integration. He describes himself as an Outlier Hunter seeking positive skew who does not want to warehouse risk. The all-weather character of his portfolio reflects decades of refining through live markets, something no backtest fully replicates.
